A Few Thoughts About “Pictures at an Exhibition”, my First Exhibition
“The concert by Modest Mussorgsky, “Pictures at an Exhibition”, was the inspiration for my degree show and my first exhibition. I wanted the exhibition to be traditional while using the methods of an installation. I chose the exhibition space of the Alzate Avendaño Foundation and each canvas was created to fit the space, so that the exhibition would be in complete harmony with its setting. I created ten paintings, each based on the individual movement of the piece, and filmed a video explaining this process so that the spectator could move through each painting and its corresponding musical movement. I designed the invitations and organized the private view. I still remember with great pleasure the intensity of listening to each movement and trying to capture its essence on the painting. I will never forget the feeling of great pride, when, after designing the invitations and the video, the exhibition was mounted, and all the paintings were flowing with ease and harmony within the gallery space. This exhibition marked the beginning of my professional career.”
